Can You Switch Around Your Nutrisystem Meals?

I sometimes hear from people who want to know if you have the flexibility to eat different Nutrisystem meals at different times of the day than what they were designated for. An example would be wondering if you could eat the Nutrisystem omelet (which is technically a breakfast meal) for dinner or wondering if you could have the Nutrisystem risotto (which is actually a dinner entrée) for lunch. Another example would be wanting to have the cinnamon roll (a breakfast entrée) for dessert at another time of the day.

I recently heard from someone who asked in part: “are you able to switch the Nutrisystem meals around so that you can eat the dinner for lunch or the lunch for dinner? I am asking because I have to leave my house very early in order to get to work on time. So by the time I eat lunch, I am famished. I want to eat the dinner entrées for lunch because that is when I am the most hungry and the portions are a little bigger. Is this allowed? I could then eat a lunch entrée for dinner when I am not as hungry but I don’t want for this to mess up my results. Would it?”

This should be perfectly fine. Because she would still be taking in the same amount of calories for the day. She would just be switching the order of the meals that she was eating. The diet is designed to be flexible and to make your life easier so I truly don’t see any problem with this. Nor do I see any problem with your eating an omelet or cereal for dinner if this is what you have the taste for. The only thing to consider here is that unless you customize your order accordingly, you get a certain amount of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. So if you have a dinner for lunch or vice verse, then you might have one less in your dinner stash. But this is no big deal. You could just have a lunch for dinner or something else for another time.

There is nothing wrong with mixing and matching your meals. Just keep in mind that you probably don’t want to do a string of days where you’re doing nothing but dinners because if you do that you would have a later time in the month or week when you were short and would need to replace these dinners with something else. (Unless of course you ordered extra dinners off the nutrisystem a la carte menu.)

But the short answer to this question, at least in my own view, is yes, I think it’s OK in my book to switch meals around if you need to or have a craving for a certain meal. Theoretically, this isn’t how the diet is designed, but I think it’s better to switch things around if you need to rather than abandoning the diet altogether.

How Hard Is It To Prepare Or Fix Nutrisystem Meals?

The other day, I received an email from someone who was interested in the nutrisystem diet but who was very honest when she admitted: “I can honestly say that if there’s a lot of work involved, I’m not going to do it. I already know from past experience that I don’t have the patience to count carbs or calories or to plan and prepare elaborate meals. How much preparation and difficulty goes into making a nutrisystem meal?” I’ll answer these questions in the following article.

How Much Preparation Is Involved In Nutrisystem Meals?: The short answer to this is “not all that much.” Many of the foods require only that you remove the wrapper and you’re good to go. What I mean by this is that they are pretty much ready to eat. Examples are the cereals (just add milk or eat them dry for a snack,) the bars (just remove the wrapper,) and the muffins (although you can heat them up if you want to.) There are many options that are like this where you only take whatever the food is out of its container and then eat it.

Some of the more substantial foods (like many of the dinner and lunches) require that you heat them in the microwave or add hot water to them. Still, this only takes a very few minutes and you aren’t having to shop for, cut up, or substantially cook anything.

Now with that said, they do want for you to add in fresh side items with each of your main meals (breakfast, dinner and lunch) but this does not really mean that you need to cook either. Sometimes, this will mean adding milk, yogurt or strawberries to your cereal. Other times, this will mean adding a salad to your lunch or dinner or a piece of fruit to the end of your meal. (And you do get some desserts so the fruit isn’t your own sweet option.) These additions do not need to be difficult or complicated unless you sometimes enjoy food preparation. In that case, you can get as elaborate as you like, as long as you follow the “low glycemic” guidelines.

Now, there is a line of frozen foods within this diet called the “select line.” In this case, the food arrives frozen and on ice. However, preparing these items is just as easy and often involves only the microwave or stove top.

Honestly, in terms of convenience, this diet and head and shoulders above many. They have done most of the work for you. You’ll just need to chose which foods you want to eat that day, decide which sides to add in, and basically just assemble it when you chose to eat one of your five daily meals. Many similar diets ask that you make a large meal each day like medifast’s “lean and green.” There is no such requirement with nutrisystem and many people really appreciate this as well as all of the “comfort food” type choices.

The Nutrisystem Diet: Does Anyone Know If (And How) It Works?

I recently received correspondence from someone who asked me several questions about life on the nutrisystem diet. Examples of the questions asked were things like: “How exactly does nutrisystem work? Do I have to count calories and carbs? What types of foods will I get to eat? How much will I get to eat? How hungry will I be? How much willpower will I need? And, how much weight can I lose?”

I will try to address all of these questions in the following article. And, I’ll try to give you some idea of what your life would be like should you chose this diet, as well as what to expect once you get started on it.

The Basics On The Nutrisystem Meal Replacement Diet: At it’s core, this is a meal replacement diet. This means that the company provides you with foods which you will use to “replace” what you would normally eat with the more preferable and safe diet meals. The good news about all of this is that it makes the diet very convenient. The meals are very easy to prepare and some only require that you remove the wrapper.

And, you aren’t responsible for counting calories or carbs either. This has been done for you by the company. They do ask for you to add a fresh side item in with each meal, but they offer suggestions that make this very easy. And most of the time, this is just a piece of fruit, a prepackaged or bagged salad, or a cup of yogurt, cottage cheese, or pudding.

They have you eating six times per day. Most of the time, this breaks down as a breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and snack. However, you can work out the timing of this however you like. Most people find that it’s just easier (and helps with hunger) to eat every couple of hours or so. This also can help with ketosis and with keeping your metabolism steady also, which I’ll discuss more below.

Nutrisystem Works With A Calorie Deficit Combined With Ketosis: Before I started researching this diet, I assumed that it worked by saving you a lot of calories each day. And, this is part of how it works. But, there’s another mechanism at play also and it’s called ketosis. See, the diet’s food are low in both carbohydrates and calories. They are also high in protein and fiber. These things work together to put your body in fat burning mode or ketosis. This where your body no longer has those excess carbs to burn so it must use your own fat for fuel. And, as gross as this sounds, it’s a good thing in terms of weight loss and how long this whole process takes.

The Foods That You’ll Be Eating On The Nutrisystem Diet: I believe that the biggest strength of this diet is the foods. There are well over 150 food choices and there are a lot of foods included that you don’t typically associate with diets. Examples are things like pizza, fajitas, ravioli, macaroni and cheese, wraps and paninis, nachos, chocolate cake, and sundaes. (You can see a full nutrisystem food list here.)

And, the diet includes many different program choices depending upon your preferences and objectives. There are programs for both women and men. There is a part time program. And, there are programs for people with diabetes, for vegetarians, and for people who are above 60 years of age. So, some of the foods are omitted in some of these programs for obvious reasons. (For example, the hot dog would not be offered in the vegetarian program.) But, all of the programs have a lot of decent tasting choices.

The Cost Of Nutrisystem: First of all, I have to tell you that there is no monthly fees or membership costs for this diet. You only have to pay for your food. And, there’s no premium for the specialty plans (like the vegetarian and diabetic programs.) Most people opt for one of the monthly packages because it works out to be cheaper. Generally speaking, these packages start at around 9 for the whole month. There are also usually coupons available that will bring these costs down. Does The Nutrisystem Diet Really Work? Will I Really Lose Weight?: Of course, I can’t predict any outcome without knowing more details. And, common sense will tell you that results will vary. But, there have been some promising clinical studies which show favorable results. And, the company literature indicates that a loss or 2 – 5 pounds per week approaches what is typical or what is approaching the norm. Of course, moving a bit more and being careful to keep your sides low on the glycemic index can all help to ensure that you end up with the results that you want. Examples Of Foods And Meals On The Nutrisystem Flex Plan

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the Nutrisystem flex meals.  There’s a lot to like about this program because it allows you to take two days off each week. And, it’s about 0 cheaper than the regular women’s program.  But, there’s some misconceptions about the food which I’ll address in the following article.

The Food Really Isn’t Any Different.  You’re Just Getting Less Of It: There are no “special foods” for the Nutrisystem flex plan.  But, you are getting enough meals to eat five times per day for 20 days rather than for 28 days.  So, when they ship your order, less food will be in the box since you are taking eight days off per month.  But, the choices for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and desserts remain the same. You can still chose any foods you like off the menu. You’ll just be choosing for 20 days rather than for 28.  I’ll go over a sampling of the foods below.

Sample Nutrisystem Flex Menu:  When you order any Nutrisystem package, you’re given the choice to go with a sampling of the most popular items (“order favorites”) or you can hand pick your own (“chose your menu”)  Below are items from the order favorites.  But, the entire lot of food choices is available if you want to hand pick your foods.  There is no additional cost for this. The base price of both of these is about 4 (and that is before coupons, specials, or incentives, which usually bring this down even more.)

Breakfast Menu Sample:

apple scone

blueberry muffin

granola bar (chocolate chip is often included)

cereal (often included is granola, Nutricinnamon Squares (like Life cereal), Nutriflakes (like frosted or corn flakes), and NutriCrunch (like captain crunch but much less sweet), and

dessert bars: (chocolate and peanut butter, chocolate crunch, chocolate caramel – all pretty good)

cookies (peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, macadamia nut, chocolate chip, white chocolate, almond)

pretzels

chips.

As you can see, there are some pretty good offerings here, but again, this is the popular choice package.  There are some really good choices left out here (like the tacos, the bisotti, the lemon squares, the chocolate pound cake, etc.)  Basically, in the favorites package that you giving you what most people like the best, but you aren’t bound to these.  As I said before, you can hand chose your foods using “chose your menu” if you like which gives you the option to only get the foods that you like in the flavors that you prefer.

Then you include your dose of protein, such as a glass of non-fat milk and a fruit. It’s so simple that the dieter starts to get the rhythm down.

People grow jaded in a short span of time. Having so many choices keeps it interesting. People crave variety and they offer such variety people enjoy it and lose weight. The nourishment is well-adjusted for excellent health. On NutriSystem, you get to have what you crave on a daily basis.

Is There Ever A Big Sale Or Clearance On Nutrisystem Food?

I often receive emails which tell me that the writer has made the decision to go with the NutriSystem diet, but they are waiting for the “clearance” and they want to know when this occurs. When I ask open ended questions to try to determine what they mean, I’m often told that the writers perceive that there are certain times of the year where the company sells discontinued or overstocked food at a huge discount or on clearance. Or, they think that there is one time of the year where there is a huge sell off or “above and beyond” discounts offered. Sometimes they think that there are third party dealers that are able to sell the food at a discount.

These perceptions are not really the reality, although there certainly are ways to save huge amounts of money on this diet’s food, which I will discuss more in the following article.

The Best NutriSystem Discounts: First off, I have to say that I honestly don’t think there is overstocked food and when the items are discontinued (which is pretty rare) it just stops being offered and something else takes it place.

What happens instead is that the company will typically rotate very generous discounts and incentives. Often, what will fluctuate is whether it is free food offered (anywhere from 2 -3 weeks), or – 0 dollars off, or both. Ocassionally, they put a certain package on sale or on clearance.  For example, in the beginning of 2011, they had a special on the nutrisystem select line where they were charging the same price as the regular line for it. That’s a very nice savings. (You can see what specials are currently running at http://celebrity-diet-review.com/)

Now, to get the very best deal, you will typically need to sign on for auto shipping. What this means is that you are ordering your food by the month and you are allowing the company to automatically ship it to your when your order is up. Although you can change this at any time, they will often offer you not only the very generous discounts that are running at the time (and the best of the bunch too), but also 10% and free shipping on future orders. And it’s often the best incentives that are offered with auto ship (like the 0 off or the 3 weeks of free food.)

If you are not sure that you are going to be on the diet for enough weeks that auto ship makes sense, (you can figure this out considering that most people lose 2-3 pounds per week,) then you will likely still want to go month to month rather than buying the foods individually. The reason for this is that usually the biggest and best coupons (like off and up or some weeks worth of free food) are reserved for the monthly packages.

The company does sell the foods individually, by the week, or a la carte, but you often (if ever) can not use the good coupon codes for this so you will actually be paying a good deal more per meal. Of course, if you care about evaluating the foods rather than what you are spending, there are always exceptions to what makes the most sense.

I sometimes get questions from folks wondering if vegetarians can use Nutrisystem foods and products and if so, how many choices are available and how decent tasting is the food? I’ll address these questions in the following article, but I can tell you that very few high protein diets offer as many choices and options for vegetarians as this one does.

Why High Protein Diets Are Often Off Limits For Vegetarians: There’s very little question that low carb diets often yield impressive results.  But, these types of diets can be hard for vegetarians because most high protein diets rely heavily upon meat or animal protein in order to steer clear of carbs and sugars while loading up on protein and fiber. This often raises concerns about the fat and cholesterol that you are taking in and whether it’s too high or not.

Nutrisystem Offers A Decent Amount Of Vegetarian Choices That Are Still High In Protein:  Nutrisystem has a special package just for people who want meatless options. It doesn’t cost any more than the regular plan.  The choices are pretty generous and they want you to eat five times per day so your metabolism stays up and you aren’t as hungry. 

 Here’s a few examples from each meal. For breakfast, there are pancakes, muffins, oatmeals, and scones. Although you would typically consider these foods carbs, the company manages to bump up the protein content and to keep the sugars low.
